Mad Catz (MCZ) shares jump on Sony agreement

Company gets North American rights to manufacture Rock Band-compatible guitar controllers

Shares of video game accessory provider Mad Catz Interactive (TSX: T.MCZ, Stock Forum), jumped more than 24% to 43 cents on Friday, after the company announced that it has signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment America, for the North American rights to manufacture, market, and sell wireless Rock Band-compatible Fender American Precision Bass replica, Fender Telecaster replica and Fender full-size, wooden Stratocaster guitar controllers for PlayStation 3.

"We are excited to begin this relationship with Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. for wireless Rock Band guitars, which we are now beginning to ship," said Darren Richardson, president and CEO of Mad Catz.

Earlier this month, the company also announced that it obtained non-exclusive rights to develop and market a range of accessories for the Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi systems.
